A group of five ROAM members, including myself, had the amazing opportunity of taking a class with Lucky (@lucku_poleoozza) and Lo (@_brizzolara) at the Catwoman Pole Academy (@catwomanpoleacademyboulder).
We were all at a beginner level, but at the end of the class, we all excelled in executing at least a couple of moves. The environment of the class was extremely accepting and supportive. We started by sharing our names, pronouns, goals for the class and our stage names if we had one. One thing was consistent across all of our goals: a desire to be empowered in our bodies. Whether that be through feeling sexy, feeling strong, or a combination of both, we all experienced the liberation of dance.
Dance is a sport that leaves you feeling totally in tune with your body and aware of its every movement. Through this awareness, you can feel so much power in doing something that is both difficult and enjoyable, especially as you feel yourself improve.
One of our instructors, Lo, spoke specifically about how liberating it is to feel strong and sexy through dance. Our other instructor, Lucky, noticed my hesitation to film myself on the pole and eased my worries by encouraging me with a sentiment that I would look back on the videos and feel sexy. Although I wasn’t entirely pleased with my execution of many moves, I did feel the empowerment in getting slightly better every time we went through the routines we were learning and found myself sharing the videos with those close to me to celebrate how strengthening, both physically and mentally, it can be to dance and work out.
Despite being scared and nervous, I left feeling more confident and excited to try pole dancing again. I encourage everyone to take risks, do things that scare you, and love yourself, including your body, but without letting your body be the sole reason for your self-worth. We all have so much to offer the world, and through trying new things, you can also find out what you have to offer yourself.
